Photobook: In the Basement
In the Basement is Ulrich Seidl's return to the documentary form: In loosely connected scenes he turns his gaze on films brass bands and opera arias, expensive furniture and cheap men's jokes, sexuality and sadism, fitness and fascism, snakes and guns, love and the longing for love. This book is meant to accompany the film: Using film stills and texts, it directs our attention to the specific aesthetic and socio-political dimension of Seidl's signature tableaux. Selected themes of this excursion through the basements of Austrian single-family homes are explored in texts by selected film critics, philosophers, psychologists, writers and essayists who shed light on the subterranean seclusion.
